Barbara Goodwin is running to represent Senate District 50, which includes Arden Hills, Columbia Heights, Fridley, Hilltop, New Brighton, Shoreview, and St. Anthony.
Goodwin, a Democrat who previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives, has a record of being a friend to animals. During her tenure as a legislator, Barb prevented the slaughter of deer that had been trapped in the Minneapolis Water Works in Columbia Heights. The Department of Natural Resources was shooting the deer and neighbors were upset to see deer who had always openly resided on those 77 acres being shot. Working with her constituents, Barb managed to have the deer transported out of the area to an animal farm. She also fought against the shooting of mourning doves, and spoke about it at a rally held at the Capitol.
Barb stands in stark contrast to the incumbent she challenged and beat in the primary. Senator Chaudhary has been a powerful and vocal opponent of animal issues. This past biennium Chaudhary voted against the puppy/kitten mill bill, the pets in orders for protection bill, and he voted for a bounty on coyotes. Senator Chaudhary has also been embroiled in an ethics controversy- he was formally reprimanded by the Senate surrounding a provision he included in a game and fish bill, wherein he attempted to create regulations improving fishing on a lake on which he owns a cabin. On June 14, 2010, the Star Tribune ran a hard-hitting article about him, How close to outdoors groups is too close for Sen. Chaudhary?
If we want to see stronger laws that protect animals we must have humane candidates in office. Turn your compassion for animals into concrete victory at the polls. Let us know you’d like to get involved today!
